Question

I am separated from my spouse but we are in a nesting arrangement. What marital status do I include in my 2023 tax filing?

We have been separated since October 2023. We share expenses on the marital home because we are still in seperation negotiations. We maintain our own seperate residences as well. We are each in the marital residence with our child 50% of the time each, but never reside there together.

    Because the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has special rules about cohabitating and sharing bills, you will need to contact them to clarify which status they wish you to enter on your return. Please contact the CRA by calling 1-800-959-8281.
