Question

My husband and I have 1 child together. When asked how dependents, do we each say 1 or does just one of us?

If you are preparing your returns together, then you only need to enter the child once.

If you are preparing your returns separately, then you would only need to add the child on your or your spouse's return if you are claiming credits based on the child. So you may need to enter the child on both returns, but in that case please make sure that you aren't both claiming credits that can only be claimed by one parent.
