As per turbo tax, amended  should flip fed and state amounts to 0.  TheyDO NOT.  Says I owe thousands before any changes.

Yes, that can happen if you make any changes to the return before indicating that you need to amend it.

You can fix this by canceling the amendment and making sure the return matches the one that was filed. Once the original return is restored, you can start again.

Here's how to restore your return in TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account.
  2. Select Other Tax Situations.
  3. Expand Other Tax Forms, then select Amend a return.
  4. Select Nevermind, I don't need to amend, then Continue.
  5. Now, verify that the return matches what you filed originally. If the refund or tax due doesn't match your original result, you will need to review the return, and make corrections until it does. It's best to work from your original documents to do this.

Once it matches, print or save a copy and start again:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax.
  2. Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and select the year you want to amend.
  3. Select Amend (change) return, then Amend using TurboTax Online.
  4. Carefully follow the directions to start your amendment.
  5. Your refund will go to zero, don't worry, that's normal.
  6. On the screen OK, let's get a kickstart on your amended return, select the reason(s) you're amending, and Continue.
  7. When you reach Here's the info for your amended federal return, select Start next to the info you need to change.
  8. Continue through the screens, make the changes you need to make, and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return.

Using desktop version, not the online version. This is not the first time I have had to amend a current year tax return in Turbo tax so I know the procedure; in previous years, my amended return reset to 0 and all went well.

As I stated, I have NOT made any changes whatsoever to my 2023 filed tax return.  As soon as I do the amended, instead of rest to 0 for federal tax,  it indicates I owe over $1800 BEFORE I enter anything.  Totally BOGUS.  Column A is NOT pulling the correct AGI nor the correct Refund amount from my return.  And,  it seems to be pulling the amount from line number 28 from federal carryover worksheet instead of my original refund from filed 2023 return.  There is an issue with software coding!!

If I override these invalid numbers in Column A with the correct values from my return, then the federal tax resets to 0.

Yes, I have the same problem. I open the original return as filed, without changes, try to amend it, and the original amount in box A1 is copied incorrectly from the original return. This problem has been reported for many years, but is not acknowledged (or fixed) by Intuit.
