Question

Amending a claim after I received a refund

I claimed my son and I need to remove him from my taxes. I have already received my refund. Can I use the 1040x to change my filing status and remove him as a dependent and then can he claim himself in his filing?

Yes.

You can now amend your tax return to remove him as a dependent. You may have taxes due, which have to be paid with your amended return.

Your son can then file his nondependent tax return, but he'll have to file by mail, as the IRS can take up to 16 weeks to process your amended return.
