The IRS was closed in April. They closed in March for several months due to Covid-19. See my post above. They only recently started opening the mail that has been stacking up. They had like 11 million pieces of mail piling up and need to go though.
The IRS has not been working on mailed returns until very recently---and an amended return could only be filed by mailing it in until late August 2020 when the IRS began to accept e-filed 2019 amended returns. Under normal circumstances you would be able to see something about your mailed in Form 1040X after about three weeks, but that is not the case right now. The usual 4 months for processing an amended return is going to take longer. Sorry.
Processing Delays for Paper Tax Returns: Taxpayers should file electronically through their tax preparer, tax software provider, or IRS Free File.
We’re experiencing delays in processing paper tax returns due to limited staffing. If you already filed a paper return, we will process it in the order we received it.
Do not file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.
If you mail a tax return (or a payment) to the IRS, it is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it like UPS or certified mail so you will know it was received.
TurboTax will not know anything about your amended return, and nor will TT know that you put your 1040Xin an envelope and took it to a mailbox. TurboTax does not get updates on mailed(or e-filed) returns.
When the IRS finally opens its mail and begins to process mailed returns you can check the status on the IRS site.

I'm wondering if anyone that's had this problem finally received their refund from the amended return. I'm happy to wait if everything is ok. I just don't really want to sit on hold waiting for the IRS.
We're all in the same boat, and all we can do is wait patiently. Personally, I don't expect it be processed or even an update until October/November. It's truly unprecedented what the IRS is going through. Offices were closed, flood of returns from the new tax filing date (July 15th), AND responsible for distributing stimulus checks (a huge unscheduled project). I most certainly do not envy the IRS's situation right now.
They sure do withdraw my estimated tax payments quickly though! Literally the next day! 🙂
Be sure you are entering your SSN, DOB, and zip code correctly in the "Where's My Amended Return" tool.
Here's how to speak to someone at the IRS to see if they can tell you if they received it. If they say they don't show it on their system, tell them it's been 5 weeks and not showing up in that tool. And ask them if you should mail it again or give it more time to show up in their system.
For future reference, it's a good idea when mailing things to a tax agency to use a method that has tracking such as Priority Mail or certified return receipt.
IRS: 800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Mon-Fri
Listen to each menu before making the selection.
First choose your language. Press 1 for English.
Then do NOT choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
Instead, press 2 for "personal income tax".
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
It may then ask for your SSN, but do not enter it. Just wait. If it asks for SSN a second time, still do not enter it.
Then it will get "tired", and you'll get another menu. Choose 2 for "personal".
Then in the next menu choose 4 for "all other inquiries", and it should transfer you to an agent but expect a long wait.
I usually use a speakerphone so I can work on something else while waiting.
If youmailed an amended tax return in February, you can expect it to be a considerable amount of time before your additional refund is processed, unfortunately.
An amended return in typical processing times takes 12-16 weeks. However, the IRS stopped processing all paper filed returns, including amended returns, in early March. In some areas, processing is slowly resuming as IRS workers return to offices but it is not yet known how long it will take the IRS to catch-up on processing.
I sent mine in too 5 weeks ago. I did use certified mail with a return receipt.I didnt get the return receipt back but I tracked the certified mail and they received it March 16. Its still not showing online either.

***************************************NOTE*********************************************** Amended returns can take up to 16 weeks (4 months) to process in normal times but due the the Corona virus shutdown the IRS is not even opening mailed returns at this time and just storing them so the 16 weeks will not even start until the IRS returns to normal - whenever that will be - and there will be a huge backup of mail. https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations-during-covid-19-mission-critical-functions-continue ********************************************************************************************

Thank you for the additional note there! It has been about 6 weeks since I sent my return Certified Mail (verified it was received). Would be nice if the IRS added a message to that effect when people search for the amended return, although I had assumed it had something to do with the pandemic.

So i filed as dependent initially but my mom told me she isn’t claiming me this year because I live alone so I changed it like a month ago, and I was told I was going to receive the covid stimulus check however if they aren’t opening mail then how will that happen?
