*********UPDATE*******

I mailed in my amended return the end of Feb/beginning of March. I did have it set for direct deposit BUT I received a check in the mail finally yesterday! Aug 27

So if you mailed yours in around that time be looking in the mail for a check

Hope this helps!

FYI - They only mail checks for refunds.  No Direct Deposit.

See 1040X instructions page 19 for line 22 middle of first column

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040x.pdf

It says.....You will receive a check for any refund due to you. A refund on an amended return can’t be deposited directly to your bank account.

I sent in my 1040x Amendment tax return April and it's still not showing anything I would love to know why

VolvoGirl
July 17, 2020

Because the IRS is not opening the mail.

In normal times it takes up to 16 weeks or more to process an Amended 1040X return.  But these are not normal times.

They just started opening the mail in June that's been stacking up. So you have to keep waiting.

See this IRS page for the latest information

https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations-during-covid-19-mission-critical-functions-continue

Then once they start opening the mail, After 3 weeks you can track it here,

I mailed in my amended returns (state n federal) on March 08,2019. I received my state in first week of May, but when I check my federal it says it doesn't have my info. Very frustrating.  I am relying heavily on this, as many other people are, I'm sure. I don't know what to do.

July 29, 2020

is 2019 correct?  if so all you can do is call the IRS. TT receives no info on amended returns.  it's likely the return never got to them. before sending in another copy call.   if it's 2020 it's likely that the IRS hasn't processed it yet. it stopped processing manual returns for about 4 months so it's far behind. you may have to wait another 8 to 12 weeks.

800-829-1040
First choose your language.
Then 2
Then 1
Then 3
Then 2
You should then be transferred to an agent, but there is likely to be a long wait.

chances of seeing your amended return show up on IRS status page is pretty slim.

does not mean the IRS didn't get it.

August 5, 2020

I mailed mine April 6th and the amended return tool never told me it had been accepted or processed, anything. It’s been 17 weeks now and have still not heard. It just says we can’t find it in our system. I have tried many numbers but can’t actually talk to a real person.

August 5, 2020

The IRS did not open any mailed documents for several weeks and is still way behind in processing them. It could take another 2 months or more for your amended return to be processed. Only the IRS knows when it will be finished. If they haven't even opened it yet, no one at the IRS would be able to tell you when it will be completed and you wouldn't be able to track it on the IRS tracking site for amended returns. Are you tracking the status at this site? https://www.irs.gov/filing/wheres-my-amended-return

You can try calling the IRS using this procedure but they are hard to get a hold of.

Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.
Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Then press 4 for all other inquiries
It should then transfer you to an agent.

Yes, I have done all of those things with no luck. Check my return status says it’s processing and then I check the amended status it tells me to check back later because it doesn’t have the information. I’ve called and followed those steps right as they opened in hopes of low call volume.

September 3, 2020

I sent my amended out on june16.still have not heard nothing

September 3, 2020

And you will not hear anything for quite awhile, probably.

The IRS has not been working on mailed returns until very recently---and an amended return can only be filed by mailing it in.  Under normal circumstances you would be able to see something about your mailed in Form 1040X after about three weeks, but that is not the case right now.  The usual 4 months for processing an amended return is going to take longer.  Sorry.

Processing Delays for Paper Tax Returns: Taxpayers should file electronically through their tax preparer, tax software provider, or IRS Free File

We’re experiencing delays in processing paper tax returns due to limited staffing. If you already filed a paper return, we will process it in the order we received it.

Do not file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.

If you mail a tax return (or a payment) to the IRS, it is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it like UPS or certified mail so you will know it was received.

TurboTax will not know anything about your amended return, and nor will TT know that you put your 1040X  in an envelope and took it to a mailbox.  TurboTax does not get updates on mailed  (or e-filed) returns.

When the IRS finally opens its mail and begins to process mailed returns you can check the status on the IRS site.

I filled my admended return in February/March. I haven't received my money or I can't see it showing up on the irs screen. I faxed extra copy's and emailed them. Still after they ask me all my tax info. They can't find it. Starting to think they haven't even opened the mail. It is now 6 months. Where is my money???

September 5, 2020

@anl2035- Imagine a needle in a haystack.  That could be the envelope that your amended return is in--the IRS is working on opening over 11 million pieces of mail that piled up in trailers during the pandemic.  Until yours makes it out of the pile, someone opens it and enters it into the system, you will not see anything about it on the IRS site.

The IRS would save themselves and everyone else a lot of trouble by adding this information to their f***king website. As it stands, it still says it should take 3 weeks to show up in their system...after 5 months if I can't get a status update that they've at least received it, I would think adding a couple lines of HTML to their page wouldn't be a big ask.

September 17, 2020

I recieved a check for the return difference 5 days.after I turned in my amended form. But when I called the IRS they get mad and arent helpful. I asked.if i should do non filiers or what should I do if its past 4 weeks for the stimulus check and she just told me.to keep waiting. The tracking wont show up at all for any of the sites. Ridiculous.

September 17, 2020

@Emuhleek You have added on to a thread full of posts from other people.  It is not at all clear what you are even posting about.  Are you trying to find out about an income tax refund or about a stimulus check?  And it is completely unheard of for an amended tax return to be processed in five days, so we have no idea what you sent in or when you sent it.  If you are looking for help please explain with more details.  We have no access to your tax return or your account.

September 17, 2020

I'm just wondering when the stimulus will be sent or if I should fill out the non filiers tool. I sent my ammend form on June 16 and got a check for the difference June 22. Either way, it's still not showing up in the ammend tracking tool. Not that I need it, but I would like to provide proof to the IRS for my stimulus check that it is processed because I have yet to recieve anything about the stimulus check. My amended form was simply putting that i am not a dependent and that i am independent and no one has claimed me. My parents already got their stimulus check without any dependent claims.

I mailed my amendment in to the IRS at the end of March and it’s still not showing up in the where’s my amended refund tool. What is going on?

VolvoGirl

In normal times it takes up to 16 weeks or more to process an Amended 1040X return.  But these are not normal times.

Sorry the IRS has limited staff due to Covid-19.  They just started opening the mail in June that's been stacking up. Back in March the IRS closed their processing centers and stopped processing mailed tax returns.  An IRS spokesperson recently said that they have about 11 million pieces of unopened mail.  The IRS says....."We’re experiencing delays in processing paper tax returns due to limited staffing. If you already filed a paper return, we will process it in the order we received it."  So it may take longer if you mailed in June or later.   So you have to keep waiting.

The IRS was not processing any paper tax returns from several months due to the pandemic and limited staffing.  They have only just recently started to process approximately 11 million paper returns in the order they have been received.

In a normal year it would take the IRS about 4 months to process the amended return.  This is not a normal year so patience is needed.  Use this IRS website for an amended return status - https://www.irs.gov/filing/wheres-my-amended-return

@Tiaralamey

The IRS has not been working on mailed returns until very recently---and an amended return could only be filed by mailing it in until late August 2020 when the IRS began to accept e-filed 2019 amended returns.   Under normal circumstances you would be able to see something about your mailed in Form 1040X after about three weeks, but that is not the case right now.  The usual 4 months for processing an amended return is going to take longer.  Sorry.

Here's what I've experienced, in case this timeline helps clarify things for anybody:

Feb. 23 2020: E-filed original 2019 Federal return through TurboTax

Mar. 9 2020: Received refund electronically

May 18 2020: Mailed my amended return along with a check for underpayment

July 31 2020: Check was deposited by the IRS

Oct. 1 2020 or so: The "Where's My Amended Return?" website finally shows some activity. Until this point, there was no information. I can now select a 2019 option and click CONTINUE. When I do do so, I get this:

"Your amended return was received on June 01, 2020. However, it has not been processed. We apologize for any inconvenience.  Please call [phone number removed], extension 623, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. You will need a copy of your amended return."

November 20, 2020 (today): I called the number and was told the hold would be 10 to 15 minutes. It ended up being 40, but I talked to an agent, and he said that even though the system shows June 1 as the receipt date, it's the date it shows up in the system (he stated the date as October 1) when the 12- to 16-week processing period STARTS. He advised me to periodically check the website for an update. If I don't see an update in January/February, I should call back.

I hope that helps others who are waiting.
