Forgot to Sign 1040 While Submitting W-7 for ITIN

Hi,
I recently mailed my federal tax return along with a W-7 form to apply for an ITIN for my daughter. I printed and attached the W-7, and it was signed and certified by a CAA. I also signed the W-7 form.

However, I just realized me and my spouse forgot to sign Form 1040 before submitting it in person at IRS Tax Assistance Center.

What should I do in this case?

  • Should I resend the signed tax return along with the W-7 again?

  • Or should I wait for the IRS to contact me and return the unsigned Form 1040?

  • Will the IRS still process the ITIN request even if the 1040 is unsigned?

  • IRS owes me a refund: Could this result in any penalties or delays?

Appreciate any guidance from those who have been through something similar. Thanks!

Wait to hear from the IRS.

Ok, Should I file extension as a precautionary measure? I don't owe anything to IRS and instead I would have a refund from IRS.

An extension prolongs the time to file. You have already filed.
