I filed as a dependent but my Mother isn't able to claim me this year because I made too much.  How can I change to an independent?

You will need to file an amended 2023 tax return to change your filing status.
We recommend that you wait to amend until after the IRS has processed your original return and you have received your refund (if any).

To learn more about amending your tax return, please review the information here: How do I amend my federal tax return for a prior year?

There is no specific income limit for a person to qualify to be claimed as a dependent. If you did not provide more than half your own support for the year and otherwise meet the requirements to be claimed as a dependent, then you still meet the qualifications to be claimed as a dependent whether your parent claims you or not.

Here are the qualifications from your parents standpoint:

1. The child must be your son, daughter, stepchild, foster chld, brother, sister, half brother, half sister, stepbrother, stepsister, or a descendant of any of them.
2. The child must be (a) under age 19 at the end of the year, (b) under age 24 at the end of the year and a full-time student, or (c) any age and permanently and totally disabled.
3. The child must have lived with you for more than half of the year. Temporary absences while away at college are considered living with you.
4. The child must not have provided more than half of his or her own support for the year.
5. If the child meets the rules to be a qualifying child of more than one person, you must be the person entitled to claim the child as a qualifying child.
6. The child must be a U.S. citizen or U.S., Canada or Mexico resident for some portion of the year.
7. The child must be younger than you (or your spouse, if filing jointly) unless disabled.

Texas Roger: "There is no specific income limit for a person to qualify to be claimed as a dependent."

Turbotax: "Based on what you told us, Sarah made more than 5050.00 which is above the amount allowed for Sarah to be a dependent."

One of you is wrong.

There are 2 types of dependents. There is no specific income limit for a child dependent. There is a $5050 income limit for a qualifying relative dependent.
