Question

I can’t do checks so instead I set up a payment to the IRS website and told them when I sent my amended tax return through the mail. Is this okay?

My bank would send a check FOR me but does not give me physical checks I can write. On turbo tax, in my amended tax return it said to send a paper check along with my amended tax return to mail back but with my amended return i had written a note saying I wasn’t able to write a check but sent them proof that I had set up a payment for the IRS to take money out of my account of the amount I owe. Will they accept this? Is this okay? I haven’t gotten any word about the status of my amended return yet and I sent that over 3 weeks ago.

Yes, this should be Okay.

  • The IRS will recognize the payment.
  • When they receive and process your amended return it will be applied.
  • It can take a couple of months to process the amended return
  • I'm not surprised that you haven't heard anything

You can use the IRS website Check your amended return

It may take about three weeks to start processing

You will need

  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Zip code
