Question

Is it really impossible to only efile amended fed return without amending a state return?

Hi,

I just had a chat with a TT head you told me it's "inevitable" that if you wish to efile an amended fed return you also have to efile an amended state return.  I struggle to believe that.   I only want to efile an amended fed return.  I am using TT online and the 2022 return I am amending was originally efiled.  Hoping some on this community can help.

Thanks Richard

When you change your federal return those changes are then made in the state return if the changes apply. You can file a federal amended return without filing the state amended return (assuming changes had to be made) but states generally require that you file an amended return if the changes affected the state one.

@Bsch4477    Thank you,  I found if I went through the steps of  amending my state return, I could choose an "i am not ready to file state return" option afterward.  I don't think TT is clever enough to work out that it was unnecessary to file an amended state return because there would have been no need to (the amended fed return related to a foreign tax credit - which can't be claimed in my state).

I can not find an option to not file an ammended federal tax return and not file an ammended Kansas tax return even though Kansas does not give any tax credits for heat pumps 2024 taxes.

In fact, when I put in the information for the ammended federal tax return on heat pumps form 5695, the Kansas return got really screwed up and showed I now owed them a huge amount of taxes greater than what I spent on installing the heat pump.  I had already received the original tax rebate from Kansas. What happened here?

When you get near the end where you will electronically transmit the return, you can choose only to file federal at that time.  The system will still create the state (as you're experiencing) but you do not have to transmit it.
