My 2024 tax return has been accepted, but I need to amend it. The amend/change dropdown is not available yet. How soon can I amend my 2024 filing?

I am a dependent and did not fill out the proper selection. I need to amend my filing so both filings are on time.

Being late only matters if you owe tax due. If you do not owe or are getting a refund, it is okay to file after the April 15 deadline. It is late on deadline night and you are not likely to be able to fix this by midnight in your timezone. Sorry. The remedy is for you to wait for your return to be fully processed and then amend. When you amend:

Go to MY INFO. Click your name. Go through the screens for the question that asks if someone else can claim you as a dependent. Say YES.

Meanwhile....your parent's return is being rejected. Their choices are to print, sign and mail their own return that claims you as a dependent. Or they can try to get an IP PIN to use for you on their return in order to e-file.

And...even if your parents owe----they can request an extension now and pay their tax due, and file their return later.

Remember that an extension does not give you more time to pay. You need to pay your tax due by April 15. The extension only gives you more time to prepare and file your tax return forms.

While you do need to amend your return, doing so will not allow the taxpayer that will claim you to file electronically. They may wish to file an extension (now) and then try to work on one of two solutions.

The primary taxpayer on the tax return where you are listed as a dependent can apply for an identity protection Pin "IP PIN" at Get an identity protection PIN and try to electronically file using the IP PIN. This is the IP PIN for the taxpayer, not the dependent. This new way of filing works for most taxpayers. Keep in mind the taxpayer will then need to retrieve a new IP PIN each year (or formally opt out).

If that doesn't work, they can print and mail the return tomorrow.

An extension is important as soon as possible even if a refund is expected. While it is true that there is no monetary penalty for filing after the deadline when a refund is due, there are certain statutory rights that are preserved only by filing either the return or an extension on time.
