Refund Status says Action Required

Hi guys I need help understanding this.

So basically I filed my Taxes around January 18th, 2024 and got an email back saying that the IRS processed my refund and that it was accepted. It said that the estimate should be for 02/08/2024 which is this week. However, I have been checking throughout all of last week periodically and there never seemed to be issue except to just wait until I get my refund. Today, 02/04/2024 I check the status of my refund and it says:

Refund Status Results

Action Required

Please read the following information related to your tax situation. You may need to provide additional information to receive your full refund.

Problem is, I have not even received any letters from the IRS to verify my identity or anything regarding it. I keep checking on the website from TurboTax and all it says is that my refund is being issued.

Can anyone tell me what I should do?

TurboTax receives no information from the IRS after you file your tax return.  Your only source of information after you file it is the IRS.

To  call the IRS:IRS:  800-829-1040  hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Mon-Fri

Listen to each menu before making the selection.

First choose your language. Press 1 for English.

Then do NOT choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.

Instead, press 2 for "personal income tax".

Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".

Then press 3 "for all other questions."

Then press 2 "for all other questions."  It should then transfer you to an agent.

Does that mean I should be receiving a letter soon or should I request one? I am just confused as to why they would ask me for this information without a letter if I have been filing for over 4 years now. Also, it's only because I checked online otherwise I wouldn't have known and still confused if I will even receive my refund at all 😞

I also forgot to mention that I was in the verifying process but without the control number I am unable to proceed and can't do anything. Only two options I get is yes - input the number or no and get sent a new one

I ran into the same issue. Filed my taxes on 1-20 and tax accepted on 1-22. Checked the status on the irs tool, and read the exact same thing yours is saying now. But have not received a letter from them either. I called IRS and the lady said just follow the instructions if you received a letter but refused to tell me anything further so calling them was pointless on my end. I believe you call the IRS only if you receive letters in the mail. We may not even receive a letter, they might be able to verify our identity with us having to do anything on our end is what I hope to believe. Let me know if anything changes on your end that way I know too.

Hey thank you so much for your reply!

I was starting to feel like it was only me running into this issue. I was also thinking the same thing after searching different posts and getting the same answer that they really won't help at all without a number. I don't know if I should even call tomorrow. I searched online to even see if there is a way to check for a control number but it seems those are only through mail. This is incredibly frustrating because if we hadn't checked the online tool we couldn't have known and they say to be ready with your control number (?????)

I am also hoping the same that they are able to verify that because as far as I know mine only says accepted. But yes I will be coming back to the post on the estimated date to give an update 😞

I filed on 1/17 and received a notice that my return was accepted on 1/22. I'm getting the same notice with "Where's my refund?" and have also not received a letter. I have an account with the IRS through ID.me and do not have any online notices so the letter did not go there. I have it currently configured to send both online and paper notices.

I called the verification number [phone number removed]) and the operator stated that they did not begin processing until 1/29 and since it hasn't been 21 days yet they can't pull up my account so it looks like I need to call back next Monday.

Hey,

I have been getting those same responses from the IRS reps, funny enough today I got a letter from the IRS but it's not the letter with a control number. This letter was just to tell me that someone signed into my ID.me account (which was me) and that is it. This letter has the CP303 notice. I mean the letter was sent to the correct address so that should be enough to verify but nope. We still have to wait for the actual identity verification letter.

If you recieved that letter we should have already received the verification letter long time ago. Which makes me believe no letter will be mailed just taking longer to process that’s all and we all submitted too early

This is quite the same predicament as I am going through after I filed my taxes. Which was on Jan 8, 2024. Got an email saying accepted Jan 16, 2024 est Feb. 6. Then a week or so later something about may need more information about my identity? I don't know why I have been using turbo tax to my file myself for the last 3 years and never been so out of the loop about updates . I'm wondering the same thing?

We were considered the testing batch for submitting early ..

Something that will hold up the processing of a return is this ... if you submit your return before the IRS has received and processed your tax reporting forms received from your employers and other payers which show federal withholding on them.  Until the IRS can confirm  the withholding from those sources is the same as what you claimed on your 1040 they will hold your return in the processing pipeline.   Just because you got the tax form doesn't mean the payer filed it yet ... many payers will hold the filing with the feds until the last minute to allow the employees to report errors on the forms.  This way they can make the corrections before they file the forms and save them having to file corrected forms which are a pain in the butt.

I have the same thing it says it was accepted on the 4th and would be here the 24th and it’s saying action required.

Here is an FAQ about handling identity verification requests from the IRS.

If you have not received a letter yet, you will be.

Iam in the Exact same situation. It's now March 8th and still no refund .Never got anything in the mail or any kinda emails! Says both my refunds were accepted, but when I go to track your refund Action required note pops up! Very frustrating!

Have you check the IRS "Where's my refund" site?  This is the best place to get updates on your refund.
