Schedule 1: Additional Income and Adjustments to Income

I used Intuit Turbotax for my 2023 Federal and State tax preparation. After reviewing the return, the tax expert insisted that I had to have Schedule 1: Additional Income and Adjustments to Income to report my Unemployment Income, and added it to the documents. What I didn't understand was that the total income was reported twice on Schedule 1, under #7 Unemployment Income, and again under #8z Other Income, List Type and amount. They entered the same amount as #7, and typed in RTAA Payments. This DOUBLED my unemployment income for the year and caused an overpayment of $2621. I didn't think it could be correct and called several times. The tax expert could not explain it to me, and when I wouldn't just accept it, she hung up on me. I had H & R Block review my 2023 taxes done by Turbotax (costing me ANOTHER $131-in addition to the $232.14 Turbotax charged me). I want a refund from Turbotax for what I paid them in April 2024.

RTAA payments are reported to you on IRS Form 1099-G, Box 5

Your expert says you got that document. it is not unemployment.

My 1099-G does not have a Box 5.  Under the "Payer" information, there is SOCIAL SECURITY NO.; TOTAL PAYMENT; TAX WITHHELD; TAX YEAR. If these are considered "boxes", none of them have numbers as indicated in your answer below.

The wording on the document is as follows, "This form shows the unemployment compensation (RTAA excluded) paid to you by the Department of Labor & Industry in the tax year indicated, and the amount of federal income tax withheld (if you requested tax withholding)."

Schedule 1 has line 7 with the unemployment $ listed, and then 8z (Other income. List type and amount: has the amount if UC paid to me, and type as RTAA Payments.

So my unemployment income was doubled.

Since your Schedule 1 does have your unemployment income entered correctly on Line 7, delete the 'Other Income' entry so you're not double-taxed on the income.

What documents did you get to report RTAA or Unemployment, or both.

    • If you received and posted those documents, they would be included on the Schedule 1.
    • Do you recall the agent that assisted you?
