I don’t know if I owe anything or not. It doesn’t make sense to fire return if you did not owe anything and they never told me whether I owed anything.

Did you look at your tax return? If you owe federal tax to the IRS it will be on line 37 of your Form 1040. We do not know what state you are in so we cannot tell you where to look on a state form.
