Turbotax 2023 Amendment - Child Tax Credit issue

My daughter was born in 2006; she was 17 in 2023. When I filed my tax return, she qualified for the child tax credit. I'm amending my 2023 tax return and now TurboTax is saying that she no longer qualifies for the child tax credit. I suspect TurboTax is considering her age as of 2025 and not 2023. Can anyone help me solve or work around this problem?

You lose the child tax credit in the year in which the child turns 17.   Once they are older than 16, you get the $500 credit for other dependents instead of the child tax credit.   If you claimed her as a dependent on a 2023 return, you should not have received the CTC.   You should only have the credit for other dependents ---the one for $500 on line 19 of your 2023 Form 1040.

A child age 17 or older is not eligible for the Child Tax Credit.  They are eligible for the Other Dependent credit of $500

During tax year 2021 a child under the age of 18 was eligible for the Child Tax Credit.  However, that was only for that tax year and no other.

Thanks for your help, DoninGA! I was checking my original tax return and discovered that I got $1,577 in child tax credit for my son, but I did not get the $500 you mention I should had gotten for my daughter, and nor am I getting it now in my amendment. Would you have an idea why this is happening?

The $500 credit is not refundable.  It can lower the tax you owe.
