Question

Where can I find my 2021 tax return? I filed my taxes this year but can't seem to find my 2021 transcript; Im only finding my 2020. Even on the IRS webpage it isn't there

I've looked on the IRS website and it's saying that I didn't file. I filed through TurboTax. I got a letter in the mail saying that my state return has been used to pay off an overdue traffic ticket. My federal tax return has been delayed and I've received a letter from the IRS asking for me to verify my identity, which I complied with. So I know I've filed. I'm not really sure what to do. I can't find any of the information I need and I have zero guidance.

Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them.  Log out of the account you are in now.

Or did you use the desktop version of TurboTax?  If so, the files are on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.

Sometimes people get confused by the “summary” given by TurboTax and use the wrong amount for the federal refund.  Make sure you are only using the federal refund amount, and not an amount that combined your federal and state refunds.

Your federal refund amount is on line 35a of your Form 1040

Thanks for the reply.

I've tried the account recovery where it asks my last name, social security number, and date of birth and this is the account it pulls up. If there were two, I would assume that both would be pulled up. Am I wrong to assume that? How else could I find a second account?

When I look to see if I can find a copy of my 2021 return, all I get is my 2020.

I'm only concerned because the IRS doesn't have a record of my wages and income for 2021 and they wanted me to verify my identity. When I did, it asked me questions about my tax return. I answered the questions to the best of my ability but it said something about fraud.

And, again, I know I've filled because my state tax return was used to pay off a traffic violation that was overdue and I had to set up a Credit Karma account to get my federal tax return deposited into. But I never got the refund there.

Also, I just tried to re-file my 2021 return but I got an error message saying that the one I just made is a duplicate.

I'll assume you used Online TurboTax to file your 2021 return.

The following should also verify that you are in the same account.   When you log into Online TurboTax and go to the Tax Home, it should show the status of your 2021 efiled return, such as "accepted".  Are you seeing that evidence there?

By "re-efile", did you mean you merely tried to go through the FILE section and submit it again?   If you were able to attempt to re-efile the 2021 return that had already been prepared, then obviously you are in the right account.

If you simply need to print your copy, here's an alternate method to print a copy of the 2021 return.    If your return interview is open, you can go to the Print Center inside the return using the steps I mention below.

NOTE:  When you open your return back up, do not make any changes in since it's already been filed.  If you later have to amend the return, it has to start off exactly as it was when it was originally filed.

  • If you log in and your return interview is closed, then at the Tax Home or in the section "Your Tax Returns & Documents" for 2021, look for a link "Add a State."
  • Click on "Add a State."  (you don't really add one.  That's just to open your return back up.)
  • After the return interview is open, click in the left menu column on TAX TOOLS, then PRINT CENTER.
  • Then choose "Print, save, view this year's return."
  • The next screen should offer some options:  "Just my tax returns", or "include government worksheets (optional)", or "include government and TurboTax worksheets (optional.)"
  •  The latter has the most pages.

NOTE:  Remember all PDF tax documents and tax data files are very sensitive files, since they contain your personal ID info, financial data, and possibly bank account numbers, etc.  Be sure to store them safely and securely to guard against computer theft, hacking, etc.

You didn't provide much info to go on.  Did you use Online TurboTax, and if so, does the 2021 PDF of your return that you obtain at the Tax Home not have the state return in it?  If that's your situation, here's an alternative way to get the larger 2021 PDF from inside the return interview at the Print Center.

NOTE:  When you open your return back up, do not make any changes in it if it's already been filed.  If you later have to amend the return, it has to start off exactly as it was when it was originally filed.

  • Log in to the same Online account you used to prepare the return, and at the Tax Home or in the section "Your Tax Returns & Documents" for 2021, look for a link "Add a State."
  • Click on "Add a State."  (you don't really add one.  That's just to open your return back up.)
  • After the return is open, click in the left menu column on TAX TOOLS, then PRINT CENTER.
  • Then choose "Print, save, view this year's return."

Thank you for your reply. I was not very clear regarding the problem though. When I printed out the tax forms the date 2020 was on all of them, not 2021.

@LCraig2  You have to access your own account and/or  print it for yourself using exactly the same account and user ID that you used when you prepared the return.

Start a 2022 return online and enter some personal information  so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.

The laptop I used to file my 2021 tax return crashed, so I can't retrieve my information.

@Brunob1

If you used desktop software downloaded/installed from a CD to your own computer, then the tax files are stored locally on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.  They are not stored online.  If you cannot recover them due to a hard drive failure, etc. you can get a free transcript from the IRS or for a fee of $43, an actual copy of your tax return.
