Question

Can someone fix the 1040 Schedule C car and truck expenses worksheet, item 9, as it is not accurately calculating my percent of business use? Showing 12% instead of 70%.

I got a new car and drove 873 miles in total. 605 of those miles were for business, so the percentage should be roughly 70%, however, my form for line 9 is saying it is 11.89% which is not correct.

Try going back to the mileage input screen and verify your entries.  There is no known issue with the percent of business use of a vehicle.

When you look at the Car and Truck Expense Worksheet, you should see 873 on line 5c, and 605 on line 6 based on the information you shared.

Go back through the questions and look for the one that asks if you kept track of personal miles.  Say YES.

In addition to reviewing your entries in the software, you can review the output on the Schedule C. Page 2, Part IV, of your Schedule C will reflect what you entered for mileage in the software. This calculation then transfers to line 9 on the first page for business expenses listed in Part II.

As a reminder, commuting miles are not deductible. If you included miles driven to the office, they are considered commuting and will not be included in the calculation for the standard mileage deduction.
