Question

I received a 1099-NEC for work that I do on a farm. I do not have a business or own the business I got the 1099 from. Why does turbo Tax treat it like I own a business?

I am a college student working very part time only making $6534 this year and paid $5940 in college tuition. I am confused why it thinks I have a business.

As far as the IRS is concerned you were an independent contractor---working for yourself -- no Social Security or Medicare was withheld from your pay so you have to pay self-employment tax for those.   Even if you only made $400 you would be required to file a tax return and pay SE tax.   Other self-employed college students who deliver for UberEats, Instacart, etc. find themselves in the same situation.
