Joined the military December 16th 2024, have questions about Assignment options in TurboTax

I joined the military and went to Basic Training on December 16th of 2024 in Texas i. To my knowledge Basic Training isn't considered a PCS or a Temporary Duty Assignment, but those are the only options for me to select.

It's also asking me to put my state of Residence as of December 31st, however I was only in Texas for about 3 months up until February 2025. Just confused on how I should fill this section out. Any help would be appreciated.

Basic Training would be considered as "Temporary Duty Assignment" for your tax return.

State of Residence is the state YOU pick as your resident state. It is usually the state in which you have a house you consider your home.

If you were living with your parents before Basic Training and intend to return there, that would be your state of residence.

When you are a military member, you file a tax return for your State of Residence no matter where you are stationed.

HERE is a link with more information and how you can change your State of Residence with the military.

Thank you for your service and all the best.

Hello Kris,

Thank you for the quick response, I appreciate it. I also have a follow up question: While I entered service, in December of 2024, I wasn't paid until late January. I wouldn't bother including a W-2 for the year 2024, right?

Correct, if you did not get paid until January, your wages for December will be included on next year's tax return.  @meckford23
