The worksheet for federal income tax refund received is correct, but the total posted to schedule 1 is double the amount appearing on the worksheet

Did you go through the adjustments section of the Iowa state return?   Make sure you did not duplicate any amounts in this section.    TurboTax will automatically pull the information from your federal return, so anything entered there should not be entered again in the State section.    Go back to your IA return and update the adjustments section, and click through until you come to the questions about your 2022 IA tax return; the amounts from your federal return will already be entered, you only need to confirm the amounts.

@DawnC

I have already filled my taxes, but I opened up TurboTax today to check something on my filling.  The state of Iowa had an update that loaded.  After the update, it is calculating my Iowa taxes differently (initially giving me much anxiety).  However, after reviewing the forms, I came to the same conclusion as the OP, the software is making an error.

My federal refund for 2022 was 33,782 and is correctly entered as such in the interview portion of the program.  However, when opening the forms, Form IA 1040A Schedule 1 line 14 incorrectly doubles the federal refund to 67,564 and thus increases taxes owed (substantially).  When I review my saved filled form, this is correctly listed as 33,782.

The new update appears to be causing the error.  This is a pretty substantial error for the software as many people will have federal refunds from 2022 that will be taxed in 2023.  Currently the software is calculating an excessive amount of owed state tax.

It would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2023" file that is experiencing this issue.

You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions: Go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.

  • Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
  • A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
  • On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
  • You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is. Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.
  • Reply to this thread with your Token number. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

Here are the instructions if you are using TurboTax CD/Download:

  • Click on Online in the top left menu of TurboTax CD/Download for Windows
  • Select 'Send Tax File to Agent'
  • Write down or send an image of your token number then place in this issue.
  • We can then review your exact scenario for a solution.
  • Please also tell us any states included in the return.

We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.

The problem might actually be in the worksheet for line 18.  It looks like the worksheet was created to calculate the estimated tax paid in 2023 for the 2022 tax year.  But it needs to include the refund received in 2023 for 2022.  If there was no estimated tax paid in 2023 for 2022, then because the worksheet is missing the refund in the calculation, the worksheet will create a result that is the same amount as the refund, but as a negative number.  The instructions for line 18 say that if the result is a negative number, it should be added (as a positive number) to line 14.  So, that causes line 14 to be double the refund.  The solution is for TurboTax to fix the line 18 worksheet, or failing that, just enter 0 in the last line of the line 18 worksheet in forms view.
