I have credit that I have not used in a awhile, and the balance is zero.   As far as I know they are still active. Is it bad to keep cards open, which are not using or will only use in emergencies?

Credit history and credit utilization are both key factors to your credit score, so cards that you've had for a while AND that don't have big balances is good :)

As long as you aren't tempted to use them a lot or are paying annual fees that are expensive, it may be a good idea to just hold on to them :)
