Question

Amortize treasury note premium and discount

I bought several treasury notes in 2024 in my brokage account, some of them at discount prices and others at premium prices. Do I have to amortize these premiums and the discounts? Thanks

    You elect whether to amortize at the time of purchase.  You aren't required to amortize the premiums but it is on you to track the annual premiums in order to take them at the time of sale if you choose not to amortize.  Also, you can't go back and forth.  You either amortize or you don't.
