Yes, food contributions to a homeless shelter are deductible as cash contributions to an IRS qualified charity.

See https://apps.irs.gov/app/eos/ to determine if the homeless shelter is a qualified organization.

Be sure to get a receipt for your  donations.

To report charitable contributions in TurboTax:

  • Click My Account (Top right of your screen).
  • Select Tools.
  • In the pop up window, select Topic Search.
  • In the search bar, type in charitable contributions.
  • Highlight it and select GO, and follow the prompts.
