can I claim as head of household?

I am much older than 65, widowed, live in our house with my working son.   would I be able to file and take standard deduction as head of household?

    If you are not claiming a qualifying person on your tax return as a dependent, then you cannot have Head of Household filing status.

    To qualify, you have to meet certain criteria. To file as Head of Household, you have to:

    • Pay for more than half of the expenses for a qualifying household
    • Be considered unmarried on the last day of the tax year
    • Have a qualifying child or dependent
