Question

Can I claim living in the house? when I was taking care of my ill mother, who left the house to me, I went over to her house about 4 or 5 times a week to help.

I think you are asking if the house was your primary residence for purposes of excluding all or a portion of the gain from taxes upon the sale of the house. It wouldn't seem so from what you said, as you were there attending to your parents and that was the main reason you were there. If so, you would be there only temporarily as far as the IRS is concerned, so it wouldn't be your primary residence.

However, if you inherited the house, your cost basis would be the fair market value when she died, so you may not have a gain on its sale.
