Can I include roof repair cost under solar energy installation cost?

Hi,

I got the Solar system installed and operational last year. Project started in 2023 that included updating the roof as it was a mandatory requirement. Can I include the cost of it in the overall Solar system installation?

The form 5695 ask for the solar system and labor expenses. It does not include roof repair. The roof repair needed to be done regardless of the solar system and is part of home maintenance. Perhaps there is more to your story. See IRS Energy Incentives for Individuals: Residential Property states:

Q. Is a roof eligible for the residential energy efficient property tax credit?

A. In general, traditional roofing materials and structural components do not qualify for the credit. However, some solar roofing tiles and solar roofing shingles serve as solar electric collectors while also performing the function of traditional roofing, serving both the functions of solar electric generation and structural support and such items may qualify for the credit. Components such as a roof's decking or rafters that serve only a roofing or structural function do not qualify for the credit.
