As MN includes all net capital gains income in taxable income, can I use charitable donations to help lower the taxable income? Is there a limit to how much one can deduct from charitable donations?

Minnesota allows its own subtraction, including 50 percent of charitable contributions over $500 (for filers who do not claim federal itemized deductions only).

To determine your allowable contributions, check the instructions for Schedule M1SA

    Charitable Giving Relief Act

You can report your donations on your MN state return:

    1. Open your return.
    2. Continue to the screen Tell Us About Other Income Adjustments
    3. Select Had charitable Donations
