Claiming my elderly parent on my taxes

To claim a relative as a dependent you must provide over one-half of their support for the entire year.  If you did not do that then you cannot claim her as your dependent under the Qualifying Relative rules.

To be a Qualifying Relative -

1. The person cannot be your qualifying child or the qualifying child of any other taxpayer. A child is not the qualifying child of any other taxpayer if the child's parent (or any other person for whom the child is defined as a qualifying child) is not required to file an income tax return or files an income tax return only to get a refund on income tax withheld.
2. The person either (a) must be related to you or (b) must live with you all year as a member of your household.
3. The person's gross income for the year must be less than $5,050 (social security does not count) in 2024
4. You must provide more than half of the person's total support for the year.
5. The person must be a U.S. citizen or a U.S., Canada, or Mexico resident for some part of the year.
6. The person must not file a joint return with their spouse with the following exception -
You can claim a person as a dependent who files a joint return if that person and that person’s spouse file the joint return only to claim a refund of income tax withheld or estimated tax paid.

It depends.

There is NOT a $2,000 credit for claiming a parent as a dependent. there is a $500 Non-Refundable Other Dependent Credit.  This means if you had a tax liability you could lower that by $500, but you could not get a refund if you already received everything you paid in back. Also, depending on which filing status you used, you may be able to claim Head of Household if you are able to claim your mother.

In order to claim your mom, you would have had to provide OVER half of her entire support for the year. If you only gave her some money here and there that would not count.  See below for the rest of the criteria to claim your mother as a dependent.

To claim someone as a Qualifying Relative, they must be:

• Your child ( including step children, adoptive children and foster children) or a descendent of them
• Your sibling (including half siblings) or a child of your sibling or a sibling-in-law
• Your parent or grandparents, including step parents and in laws
• Any other person that lived with you for the entire tax year
• Not a qualifying child of another taxpayer
• Someone that you provided over half of their support for during the tax year (unless meeting the multi support exception)
• Has less than $5,050 in income (not counting social security)
