I am filing as "Married filing Jointly".  My wife does not have a HSA account.  When I am in the HSA information it asks about the type of insurance that I have and I have coverage for she and I as a family.  It then asks me about her coverage and I again say that she is covered by a family since she is under my coverage.  Then turbo tax starts asking me about a gap in her coverage and why it happened.  She has had insurance for the last 30 years under me.  Anyone know how to correct this.  It seems like something got uploaded wrong.

Your spouse does not have an HSA, so she never went through the HSA interview to tell TurboTax that she had HDHP coverage (like you did) so TurboTax got confused and thought that maybe her coverage "lapsed". This happens because you answered the question, "What type of High Deductible Health Plan did [spouse's name] have on December 1, 2023?"

In fact, your spouse did not have a HDHP plan in 2023 - you did. But this poorly worded question trips up many taxpayers.

    • If you or your spouse [whoever is NAME above] did not have an HSA in 2023, then answer NONE.
    • If you or your spouse had an HSA but did not contribute to an HSA in 2023, then answer NONE. (Remember that each of you can have an HSA).
    • If you or your spouse was covered by an HDHP policy for each month of 2023, then answer NONE.

That is, answer NONE to the question "What type of High Deductible Health Plan did [name] have on December 1, 2023", because the question doesn't apply to you.
