How to Claim Other Dependent Credit While Applying for ITIN?

I am filing my federal tax return by mail and will be submitting Form W-7 to apply for an ITIN for my daughter along with my return. Since she doesn’t have an ITIN yet, I haven’t entered any number in TurboTax, but it now says she is not eligible for the Other Dependent Credit ($500).

How can I correctly claim this credit in TurboTax while applying for her ITIN?

  • Should I leave the SSN/ITIN field blank and still claim the credit? If so, how to do it?

  • Should I enter a placeholder number and then whiten it before mailing?

  • Will the IRS automatically process the credit once they assign the ITIN?

Would appreciate any guidance on the correct way to do this. Thanks!

You can enter a placeholder ITIN (9 digit number starting with 9) to complete the return. When you print it out your return, make sure you delete or white out the placeholder before mailing.
