HSA contribution correction

Hello there,

I changed my elections for HSA contributions because of Medicare eligibility to 0.

However, due to a system error, my final pay in December of 2024, still had the withholding listed.

The employer caught this before sending the funds to the HSA account and refunded me the money with my first pay check in January 2025.

However, my W2 for 2024 now shows an HSA contribution. When I asked my employer for a corrected w2 they said the correction will be on my 2025 W2 since they refunded the money this year.

Does that mean I have to pay a penalty now, and then get that fixed when my w2 next year shows a negative for HSA contributions?

Can I just put a 0 now and then not report anything next year when it shows a negative balance?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Enter the W-2 as it was reported.

TurboTax will say you over-contributed and ask if you will be making a correction in 2025 before April 15th.

Answer yes (since it was corrected)

    There will be no penalty.

There cannot be a negative amount reported with code W in box 12 of your 2025 W-2.  It seems that the employer will just be including the amount as wages in boxes 1, 3 and 5 of your 2025 W-2.
