Its not giving me an option of U.S in the provided country code list. I don't understand why I'm getting this error.  Any suggestions in how to fix the error.

The country code refers to foreign taxes that would typically be reported on a form 1099-DIV or 1099-INT. You can look on those forms in box 7 on Form 1099-INT or box 8 on Form 1099-DIV for the country abbreviation. If you can't find it, you can choose "Various" if you see that in the list of country codes. You don't see the United States listed since you are dealing with foreign taxes, so they would have to be from a foreign country.

There is no foreign country code in box 7 or 8 on the 1099 INT form Schools First Credit Union located in Tustin, CA. She did not work out of the country nor have any type of income from outside of California in the U.S. So I don't understand why it keeps wanting a foreign country code from the information entered into Turbotax. I have never had any type of problem like this in the past using your software. What solution is there to file the taxes and not have a problem with the IRS. I'm not the only one having these issue from what I have read regarding this particular 5329-S code.

Yes, a few other people have experienced this error, which comes from inadvertently selecting the foreign address dropdown in the 1099-R screen.

To correct this in TurboTax online:

  1. Open your return and make sure you are in the Federal section.
    Select Wages & Income.
  2. Find IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), on the list, click Edit/ Add to the right.
  3. Click Edit to the right of the problem 1099-R, or the first one if you aren't sure.
  4. Continue until you get to Now, let's review your 1099-R provider's info.
Look carefully at the Address type dropdown. If it says Foreign address, click the down arrow to change it back to US address.
  5. Continue until you come back to to the 1099-R summary.
  6. Repeat until you find the problem.
  7. Once this is corrected, select Review again to confirm the issue is fixed.
