Question

I installed a Heat Pump to my home and the installers said it would qualify for a $2000 home energy credit. TT says my credit is $0. How do I find out why?

There are some requirements to receive the home energy credit, which may have disqualified you from the credit.

You may claim the energy-efficient home improvement credit for improvements to your main home

For the energy efficiency home improvement credit, the home must be:

    • Located in the United States
    • An existing home that you improve or add on to, not a new home

In most cases, the home must be your primary residence (where you live the majority of the year). You can't claim this credit if you're a landlord or other property owner who doesn't live in the home.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2023, the credit equals 30% of certain qualified expenses, including:

    • Qualified energy efficiency improvements installed during the taxable year
    • Residential energy property
    • Home energy audits

I suggest going back through your TurboTax screens regarding Energy-Efficient Home Improvements to check your entries to make sure your entries are correct.

To get to your Home Energy credit section of TurboTax you can do the following:

You can do this in TurboTax Desktop:

    1. Click on the tab (top screen gray bar) "Deductions & Credits"
    2. Under the Section "Your Home"
    3. Click on "Start" or "Update" next to "Home Energy Credits"
    4. Review your answers on the screens to make sure they are correct

You can do this in TurboTax Online:

    1. Continue where you left off
    2. Click on "Deductions & Credits" in the left panel
    3. Scroll down the page to find "Your Home"
    4. Click on the (down-facing caret)
    5. Scroll down to "Home Energy Credits"
    6. Click on "Revisit"
    7. Review your answers on the screens to make sure they are correct"

Your screens will look something like this:
