You may elect to use the standard deduction whether or not you itemized deductions on your federal income tax return. However, you may itemize deductions on your Maryland return only if you have itemized them on your federal return.
Some states (e.g., California) allow you to itemize even if you used the standard deduction for the Federal return; Maryland is not one of those states.
