Question

In Michigan, does the mandatory premium for PIP coverage count toward "medical part of automobile insurance premium" even if I opt out?

My agent said that if I opt out of PIP coverage because I have health insurance, that I cannot deduct the minimal mandatory PIP coverage in Michigan. Does anyone know if that is true? Turbotax asks for medical insurance and HMO premiums paid including "the medical part of automobile insurance premium". Can I include the PIP coverage even if I opt out?

No, if you opt out of the medical portion of Auto Insurance, that cannot be claimed as a medical expense.

PIP  coverage that you pay through auto insurance is not a tax deductible expense unless you pay two separate premiums; one for yourself, spouse and dependents; and a separate premium for medical expenses for other persons.  If you pay one combined PIP premium, it is never tax deductible.

You also can't deduct anything you don't pay.  Even if there is a personal premium that is separate from coverage for other people, you can't deduct it if you don't pay it.
