Long-term care insurance premiums

Taxpayer did not itemize deductions in 2023 and for many years previous. She PAID long-term care insurance premiums during 2023 (before the 2024 tax year), covering both the quarter ending January 31, 2024 and for the quarter beginning February 1, 2024.

She also paid a premium, during 2024, for the quarter beginning May 1, 2024. So, that makes three different payments covering the period 1/1/2024 through 7/31/2024, only one of which was paid during 2024.

If taxpayer itemizes deductions, which of these payments can be itemized as medical expenses for 2024?

Only the payment made in 2024 can be deducted on your 2024 return.

She can only deduct the medical premium paid in 2024.
