Question

Medical deductions

When entering medical expenses I paid for with my personal credit card in schedule A, at the end, it shows me the amount I spent from my HSA card and asks me to confirm it and says “ we just want to make sure this money was used to pay for the medical expenses you told us about on previous screens”. But the previous screens contained expenses I paid for with my personal credit card NOT my HSA.  So it’s almost like TurboTax is subtracting the amount I spent on medical expenses with my HSA from the amount I spent with my personal credit card. Is that right?

If you withdrew money from a HSA and it was not for medical expenses it would be taxable, and you would pay a penalty.

    • Yes you will have to allocate a portion of your medical expenses to your HSA.
    • An HSA may receive contributions from an eligible individual or any other person, including an employer or a family member, on behalf of an eligible individual. Contributions, other than employer contributions, are deductible on the eligible individual’s return whether or not the individual itemizes deductions. Employer contributions aren’t included in income. Distributions from an HSA that are used to pay qualified medical expenses aren’t taxed.

I used my HSA money for medical expenses. But I also used my own personal money  - I wanna make sure that that’s clear in TurboTax

Yes. TurboTax will do the calculation on the Medical expenses worksheet.

Your Total Deductible medical and Dental expenses (Total Medical expenses less any insurance reimbursement less HSA distributions) shows on the Medical expenses worksheet line 14 and will transfer to Schedule A line 1.

How do I preview my TurboTax Online return before filing?
