Income information from the states is pulled in from the federal area of your return. Then, within the state sections, you may need to make adjustments to ensure the income is allocating to the proper states.

From the My Info section on the left, make sure you indicate you lived in more than one state during the tax year. Include the previous state and date of the move:

For the prior state of residence, you will need to create a part-year resident return, and the same is true of the new resident state. While the sale of the home is reported in the income section of the Federal return, adjustments may be necessary within the states. State law will apply to the taxation of any gain in the state. For the sale of a personal residence on a federal return, a seller who has owned and used a home as a principal residence for at least 2 of the last 5 years before the sale can exclude from income up to $250,000 of gain ($500,000 if married filing jointly). TurboTax will help you determine your exclusion.
