Question

Setting up a payment plan: is online the same as through TurboTax?

I'm ready to file but need to set up a payment plan. I want to partial pay and then make payments on the remainder. The TurboTax instructions are confusing and the answers in this form don't clarify if I go through TurboTax is that the same as "online" or does that include the extra "offline" fee? Do I choose "send a check" and then work it out on the IRS website (I have an account) or just continue with the TurboTax walk through and it's the same thing as "online"?

Yes, I would apply for the payment plan directly with the IRS.  You can file the tax return then go to irs.gov/payments.  Please post again if you have questions.

I have the same question.  The information is NOT clear.

I owe the IRS money and cannot pay.

I want to request an installment plan online with the IRS.

What are my steps to complete filing? In other words, which option do I select so that I can file my taxes, but set up a payment plan with the IRS on the IRS web site?

PS - I already have an IRS account from previous years.

You can apply for a payment plan (Form 9465) at the IRS Payment Plans and Installment Agreements website. Make sure you've filed your return before applying through their site.

Most states offer an installment payment plan as well, although the procedure varies from state to state. You can contact your state Department of Revenue for details.

The IRS does charge a user fee for setting up or reinstating an installment agreement.
