Assuming that your gas receipts are with respect to your business and you are self-employed you will enter your gas receipts on your Schedule C.

You will enter expenses relating to your vehicle in one of two ways:

    • The standard mileage rate, or
    • Actual expenses

Which one you use depends on which one you think will give you the highest deduction, the standard mileage rate or actual costs.

    • The more economical your vehicle is to operate, the more likely it is that the standard mileage rate will give you the bigger deduction.
    • The higher your vehicles operating costs (Such as gas, repairs, tires, etc.)  the more beneficial the actual cost method will be.

To enter your gas receipts in TurboTax you will:

    1. Select the Federal Taxes tab
    2. Click Wages & Income
    3. Select "I'll choose what to work on"
    4. Scroll down to "Business Items" and click "Start" or "Update"
    5. Follow through the screens and answer the applicable questions regarding your expense
    6. On the Business Expenses screen
    7. Click Start next to "Cars, trucks and other vehicle expenses"
    8. Enter your vehicle information until you reach the the screen that says "Standard or Actual Expenses" Deduction
    9. Select the Enter Actual expenses option to enter your gas receipts
