Question

Should I use the amount in line 10 that says "YTD taxes" on form 1098 for the amount of property taxes I paid on my house?

    It depends.

If you had one lender in 2024, received one Form 1098, and the lender paid your property taxes through escrow all year, then the amount in Box 10 labeled YTD Taxes would be the amount of property taxes paid for your house for the year.

However, If you had more than one lender during the year, the total amount of property taxes paid may differ. In addition, if you paid any real estate taxes directly or purchased the house during 2024 and paid taxes at closing, those amounts would also not be in Box 10. In such situations, you would have to manually calculate the total amount of deductible property taxes paid on your house.
