sold my home in APRIL 2024 , lived in it for 24 years . it was paid for , got another home . the home was vacant while i worked on it during covid. did not rent it, It was vacant for about 6 years, while i worked on it. how do i handle this home . ca

    If you sold your first home, then you would report the sale as Home Sale in TurboTax.  Since you lived in it for 24 years, you would be eligible for the home sale exclusion.  

    The home you purchased is not reported on your return.  It will not be reported until you sell it.  Since you did a lot of work to it, you should keep all the receipts for when you do sell it to show your cost basis. 

     

    To enter the Sale of a Home select the following:

    1. Federal
    2. Income
    3. Sale of Home under Less Common Income
