Question

Turbo tax asked me if my moving expenses were due to a job or military PCS. I selected due to a job (not military). Then it says it's deductible, this does seem right.

I thought only military PCS (moves) were deductible. Not a regular civilian person moving due to changing jobs to a new company. I moved from CA to VA for a job (not military) and somehow TurboTax is saying it's deductible. I don't think that's right.

Your move is not deductible on your federal return but might be deductible on your state return.

    MOVING

Per the tax laws that changed for 2018 and beyond, moving expenses are not deductible on a federal return except for certain active duty members of the military.

There are several states that allow a deduction for moving expenses on the state return:  AZ, AR, CA, HI, IA, MA, MN, NJ, NY, PA and VA  You can enter your moving expenses in the federal software and the information will flow to your state return.

Go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Other Deductions and Credits>Moving Expenses
