Where do I enter ad valorem taxes paid on my vehicles on my state taxes?

It depends.  If your state allows for itemized deductions if you don't itemize on your federal tax return, there will be a section in the state program for entry of those deductions.  If you don't see an option for entering back, make sure your state allows for deduction of ad valorem tax.  If you had named your state, I could answer that question and tell you how/where to enter.  

 

If it is a vehicle used for business, it is entered in the auto section where you list your vehicle expenses or mileage, if you take the standard deduction.

Yes, AL does deduct the portion based on the value of the vehicle. Follow these steps:

  1. Open your AL state return
  2. Go through until you see Let's Check for any AL deductions
  3. Select tax expense
  4. Start/ edit
  5. Enter the total ad valorem tax paid
  6. Enter a brief description
