Why would my standard deduction option change without me changing it?

I owe money for taxes and when I went back to continue filing, my itemized deduction changed to standard deduction and what I owe increased. How do I get back to filing it as itemized?

TurboTax chooses the deduction that would get you the biggest refund based on the information you have entered. Only TurboTax Deluxe and above can handle itemized deductions.

Also, if you and your spouse are filing separate federal returns, both of you must take the same deduction per IRS rules. If you tell the program your spouse is taking the Standard Deduction, you must file the same way as your spouse.

To change your deduction:

Open your return.
Select Deductions and Credits.
Scroll all the way down and continue to the screen that shows a comparison between your standard and Itemized deduction.
You can select Change my Deduction.
