Question

What is the federal deduction for my full time college student in 2024 if I claim them on my taxes? In 2024, they were 23 years old, until September when they turned 24.

Your full time college may qualify as dependent if they meet the requirements listed below:

Qualifying relative:

  • They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a US citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They lived with you the entire year (exceptions apply).
  • They made less than $5,050 in 2024.
  • You provided more than half of their financial support.

When claiming your child as dependent, you may qualify for the education credit and $500 Other dependent credit
