why am I not qualified for American opportunity credit due to lack of ein, when I received this credit last year?

Did you enter the schools EIN?  If not, then you need to and if that is the only issue you would then be able to claim the credit.  This is found on your 1098-T.

A. Its a new rule. It's only problem with foreign schools. All U.S. schools have a FEIN.
