CRA Result Code: 84 - Error Code #561

I am unable to submit my return due to what appears to be a false error message.

I get the following error:

CRA Result Code: 84
#561 - You entered an amount for eligible tuition fees on line 32000 and/or line 32001 of the federal Schedule 11 and on line 59140 on the provincial or territorial Schedule 11.
One of the following situations applies to your return :
1. Your province or territory of residence on December 31 is other than Yukon – Line 59140 must equal lines 32000 minus 45350 for Canada training credits plus 32001.
When line 32000 minus line 45350 is negative, then line 59140 must equal line 32001.

I am not located in Yukon, so only this applies. When I double check the PDF return, Line 59140 DOES equal lines 32000 minus 45350 for Canada training credits plus 32001. The two values are exactly $500 apart, which is the value claimed for the training credit.

Here are the values for the various fields:

32001 - $0
32000 - $2818.88
59140 - $2318.88
45350 - $500.00

Please advise how I can get this return to NETFILE.

That didn't help. Tried to call and couldn't get any help.

I had the same issue.

I believe this has enough reports now to be considered an actual bug.

Not looking forward to having it fail yet again this year. I had hoped they would have fixed it since last year.

I found a solution that worked for me. I was claiming too much! Briefly looking at my Notice of Assessment, I saw the number 500 and tried to claim that. Turns out that was how much I claimed last year.

You are entitled to 250 each year, I changed my total to 250 and it worked like a charm!

I tried this and my return was still rejected. Dropped $500 from my NOA 2022 to $250 for the correct amount, but still got the same error. I expect I will have to mail it and find better tax software!

Any other solutions?

You need to enter the amount given to you on your 2021 NOA.

I received the same error 561 and the first option also applied to me where I do not live in the Yukon. I checked and rechecked all the numbers as well, which worked out perfectly, but am still receiving the error that I cannot Netfile. I was eligible for $500 training credit, which I entered based on my 2021 Notice of Assessment. Based on this forum, I didn't even waste my time contacting Turbotax and just printed and mailed it all to submit ti to CRA.  It's unfortunate that with this many people reporting the same issue that Turbotax has not fixed this coding issue.

This is still happening and nothing fixes it. Super annoying but glad I found this!

Please double check that you have correctly entered the amount of Canada training credit limit for the year.

Also make sure you are eligible to claim the Canada Training Credit or the annual accumulation of $250.

To claim the Canada Training Credit for a taxation year:

  • you file an income tax and benefit return for the year;
  • your Canada training credit limit for the year is greater than zero (Check your NOA from last year);
  • you are resident in Canada throughout the year;
  • tuition or fees are paid to an eligible educational institution in respect of the year; and
  • the tuition and fees are otherwise eligible for the existing tuition tax credit.

To claim the annual accumulation of $250:

  • you must be over 26 and under 65 at the end of the tax year.
  • file a tax return for the year;
  • be resident in Canada throughout the year;
  • have a total of $10,000 or more of income from:
    • maternity and parental benefits, and
    • working income (income from an office or employment, business income, the taxable part of scholarship income and research grants, the tax-exempt part of earnings of status Indians and emergency service volunteers, and income under the Wage Earner Protection Program Act).
  • have individual net income for the year that does not exceed the top of the third tax bracket in that year ($155,625 in 2022).

If you are still not able to resolve this issue, please contact our phone support team at 1-888-829-8608.

As I noted, all of this was done correctly. The phone support team told me that the only way to claim this tax credit correctly at this point, due to an internal error, is to mail in the claim. I opted not to claim it on this return, and will be filing a separate claim, as per the advice of the support team advisor.

Same thing here. TurboTax didn't pull the 2021 NOA training credits from CRA and I had to put it in manually. Then this error happened. Where's the "get my money back" button?

April 10, 2023

So would it be possible to netfile the return without claiming the $250 credit, then change your tax return through MyCRA Account to claim the credit afterwards?

asking as a way to avoid the 2 month+ mail in process

Yes, you should be able to do an adjustment after you receive your notice of assessment. You may want to verify with the Canada Revenue Agency about this by calling 1-800-959-8281.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
