It seems like your employer made a slight error when filling out your w2. Your employer most likely meant to put SDI and the amount of SDI in box 14, NOT box 12. Some employers report certain state and local taxes in Box 14, such as State Disability Insurance (SDI) premiums.

You can enter this information into TurboTax as it should be, rather than how your employer actually filled it out. Therefore, simply leave box 12 blank, and for box 14 you will include the SDI and amount.

I have attached a helpful Word Doc I created that explains every box and every code on your w2. You may look at the information included regarding box 12 and box 14 to verify my recommendation.

There are 4 boxes for box 12.  They are 12a - 12d.  There is no code SDI.  There should only be a 1 letter code.  If it's really SDI  then it should be in box 19&20 or  box 14.  Ask your employer.  It may need fixing.
