Question

Can I include trademark costs in Professional Advice and Services for a sole proprietorship? What about costs for an online training, marketing and sales analysis tool?

For the trademark, you would need to claim it using capital cost allowance (CCA) with Class 14.

How you claim your training expenses depends on what the training was for. If your training was only to enhance or add to an existing skill, then yes, you can claim the expense under “Other”.

But if the training was for an entirely new skill, then you can’t claim it as a business expense. Instead, you may be able to claim the tuition in the Deductions>Students section on your tax return.

For the marketing and sales analysis tool, it would depend on how you are paying for it. If it’s a traditional piece of software, where you pay once and get to use it forever, then you would claim it using CCA Class 12. If you pay a subscription fee to use the software (Software as a Service), then you can claim the expense as Office Stationery and Supplies (Line 8811).
